Tom Mortimer selected to run for GB in U20 World Championships

Congratulations to Tom Mortimer, who has been selected to run the 5000m at the World U20 Championships at Tampere, in Finland. The championships start on the 10th July and Tom will be running on the afternoon of the 14th July.

This has been a good stadium for Stroud Juniors in the past! In 2009 at the Youth (U18) Olympics, Jennie Batten won 2 gold medals on this track!

Tom is excited and looking forward to the greatest challenge in his young career but he is under no illusions of the task ahead of him. He is the ranked 2nd in Europe and 5th fastest in world outside of Africa. The African U20 this year have totally dominated this event, and the 1st, 3rd & 4th Senior men fastest times run in the world have been by Ethiopian U20 men.

The U20 5000m final will be very close to the senior Olympic or World Championship final in quality! Admittedly without Mo Farah, we can be sure the next World Champion and Olympic champion will be in Tom's race.
