Welsh Castles Relay 2018

So another year has gone by and another successful team entered into the Welsh Castles Relay. For those of you that don't know about this one, its a 2 day, 20 stage, 211 mile staggered relay race, held mostly on road but with many hills and mountains on route from Caernarfon to Cardiff with an overnight stay in Newtown. It is organised by Les Croupiers Running Club Cardiff.

Stroud has entered a team for the last 20 years and this year would be no exception. We should at this point thank Chris Bourne (our team Captain) for the extreme efforts he went through to get the team out due to a significant number of late withdrawals. Even with Chris chasing potential runners up on the Friday we only managed to put out a team of 18 and so we knew we would be getting 2 stage penalties before we started.

The event started on Saturday morning at 11am at Caernarfon Castle and would finish on the Sunday afternoon at Cardiff Castle. This was the first year that I took part and I must say it is one of the best organised, marshalled, supported and FUN races that I have taken part in and would strongly recommend it to all our club runners for next year – as long as we get a place.

Here are a few photos from the Saturday:

The provisional results are now up and we currently are in 57th place (out of 67 teams). Not a bad position given we had 2 legs with cut off time plus a 15-minute penalty for not having a runner. This year’s team all deserve recognition for their magnificent efforts in what turned out to be 2 really hot days for running:

As soon as the final results are published we will update the link. Chris Young has also managed a “Club” history of the race for the last 20 years and we will be putting this up on the website in the next few weeks so people can see a key part of the Club running history.

Another big thank you needs to go to Alan Pitt and Anita for organising the accomodation and food on Friday and Saturday night which helped create a great atmosphere before the races.

Anyway that’s it for now and I for one am really looking forward to next years race.
