On the 27th January, Stroud & District Athletic Club runner Darren Jewell travelled to Eilat in Israel to take part in the Israman Ironman. This event is considered to be one of the world’s hardest Ironman competitions. It combines a 2.4-mile swim race in the Red Sea, a 112-mile bike race in the hot rolling hills of the Negev Desert finishing with a 26.2-mile marathon run.
After a good swim, followed by a grueling 112-mile bike ride which consisted of an eleven mile ascent totaling 9100ft Darren crossed the line after his marathon run in 26th place (4th in his age category) in a field of over 400 competitors. His total time for the competition was 12 hours and 16 minutes. He was just 10 minutes away from a podium place. This sterling performance is his best Ironman finish to date.
To celebrate his 40th birthday year Darren has set himself a personal challenge to prove that with a mind and body of steel there really are no limitations. He will run a marathon distance every month during 2018. His challenge started with the Milton Keynes Marathon after his 40th birthday in December followed by the Israman iron man in January.
On the 10th February, accompanied by fellow local runner John Tierney and friends he will be pounding the streets of Stroud taking part in a group challenge put together to specially to raise money for the Acorn Children’s Charity. The run is called “The Top of Town Marathon”. It consists of 12 loops of the hilly Bisley Road and Bisley Old Road loop. If any local runners would like to challenge themselves and enter to run the marathon or just parts of it please contact Darren at Mrallugot@gmail.com for details.
